SAC STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD

The Student Advisory Committee together with SWAN’s Membership Committee have created a travel award, the “SAC Student Travel Award.” The award will help defray travel and meeting expenses of new or returning student members. The SAC Travel Award is open to all undergraduate and graduate students only from the host country (i.e., from the country where the Annual Meeting is being held this year). The award is limited to 10 recipients who will be randomly drawn from the pool of eligible applicants and would receive $500 USD cash at the Meeting.

The Applicant:

• Must be a student living/working in the host country.
• At the time of applying, must be a current SWAN student member.
• At the time of applying, must be registered to attend the current SWAN meeting.
• Must be first author on either a talk or a poster at the current SWAN meeting
  • Cannot receive the award two years in a row.

PREMIO DE VIAJE ESTUDIANTIL SAC

El Comité Asesor Estudiantil junto con el Comité de Membresía de SWAN han creado un premio de viaje, el “Premio de Viaje Estudiantil SAC”. El premio ayudará a sufragar los gastos de viaje y reunión de los miembros estudiantes nuevos o que regresan. El Premio de Viaje Estudiantil SAC está abierto a todos los estudiantes de pregrado y posgrado solo del país anfitrión (es decir, del país donde se lleva a cabo la Reunión Anual este año). El premio está limitado a 10 destinatarios de entre los solicitantes elegibles y recibirán $500 USD en efectivo en la Reunión.

El solicitante:

• Debe ser un estudiante que vive/trabaja en el país anfitrión,
• Al momento de solicitar, debe ser un miembro estudiantil vigente de SWAN.
• Al momento de solicitar, debe estar inscrito para asistir a la reunión actual de SWAN.
• Debe ser el primer autor de una ponencia oral o un póster en la reunión actual de SWAN,
  • No puede recibir el premio dos años seguidos.

BRUCE STEWART STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD

The Southwestern Association of Naturalists is granting student travel awards to help defray travel and meeting expenses for students attending the 71st Annual Meeting to be held on 10-13 April 2024 at the University Autonoma of Aguascalientes, Mexico, Aguascalientes. These awards will be given to students currently enrolled in an institution of higher education outside of the USA who are presenting papers or posters. Students must be current SWAN members, registered for the 71st Annual Meeting, and first author on a paper or poster. Those who have received two travel awards previously are ineligible. Deadline for application is March 01, 2024. To help you with the proposed budget, here are estimates of some of the costs:

• Student Registration $75 USD
  • Picnic $22 USD
  • Banquet $37 USD
  • Lodging variable and depends on your choice of hotel and if the room is shared (preferred). For budgeting purposes, use $42 USD/night/person.
• Airfare is variable, depending upon your departure city to the Aguascalientes International Airport (AGU) in Aguascalientes.

PREMIO ESTUDIANTIL PARA VIAJAR BRUCE STEWART

La Southwestern Association of Naturalists está otorgando premios de viaje para estudiantes para ayudar a sufragar los gastos de viaje y reunión de los estudiantes que asistirán a la 71ª Reunión Anual que se llevará a cabo del 10 al 13 de Abril del 2024 en la Universidad Autónoma de aguascalientes, Mexico, Aguascalientes. Estos premios se otorgarán a estudiantes actualmente matriculados en una institución de educación superior fuera de los EE. UU. que presenten ponencias orales o posters. Los estudiantes deben ser miembros vigentes de SWAN, estar escritos para la 71ª Reunión Anual y ser el primer autor de una ponencia o póster. Aquellos que hayan recibido dos premios de viaje anteriormente no son elegibles. La fecha límite para la solicitud es el 01 de Marzo de 2024. Para ayudarlo con el presupuesto propuesto, aquí hay estimaciones de algunos de los costos:

• Inscripción estudiantil $75 USD
  • Picnic $22 USD
  • Banquete $37 USD

WILKS AWARD

The Wilks Award is presented to the student giving the best oral presentation in the Plenary Session at the Annual Meeting of the Association. Research must be primarily the work of the student, not of the major professor, and the student must be both a member of SWAN and first author. From those submitting written summaries, a judging panel will select up to approximately three students to make oral presentations (15 minutes in length) in a special plenary session consisting of approximately six students competing for the Wilks and Student Field Natural History Awards combined at the beginning of the Annual Meeting. A winner for each award will be selected from this group of six based on the quality of the oral presentation and the significance of the results. Finalists will receive a $250 USD honorarium to cover the costs of attending the meeting and all finalists are required to attend the annual banquet. The Wilks Award recipient receives an additional cash award of $1000 USD, a certificate, and a set of all available back issues of The Southwestern Naturalist. The winner will be announced at the Annual Banquet.

CLARK HUBBS STUDENT POSTER AWARDS

The Clark Hubbs Student Poster Awards are presented to students displaying the three best posters at the Annual Meeting of the Association. The first place award provides a certificate, a cash award of $600 USD, and a set of all available back issues of The Southwestern Naturalist. The second and third place awards will receive $400 USD and

$300 USD, respectively. Although posters may be coauthored with the major professor, the work presented must be primarily that of the student and the student must be the first author and a member of SWAN. A panel of judges will select the winners based on the quality of the visual presentation and the significance of the results.

PREMIOS AL PÓSTER ESTUDIANTIL CLARK HUBBS

Los Premios al Póster Estudiantil Clark Hubbs se entregan a los estudiantes que exhiben los tres mejores posters en la Reunión Anual de la Asociación. El premio del primer lugar proporciona un certificado, un premio en efectivo de $600 USD y un conjunto de todos los números anteriores disponibles de The Southwestern Naturalist. Los premios del segundo y tercer lugar recibirán $400 USD y $300 USD, respectivamente. HOWARD MCCARLEY STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS

The Howard McCarley Student Research Fund provides as many as eight awards annually, up to $3000 each, to support student research. Applicants must be students (undergraduate or graduate) currently enrolled in an institution of higher education, a SWAN member, and be sponsored by a faculty member. Awards will be made in support of any aspect of research on biota of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America except for travel to meetings. Individuals may receive a maximum of two grants from the Association. All qualified students are encouraged to apply, especially those in developing countries. Grant applications may be in either English or Spanish. Two letters of recommendation must be submitted in support of the application. One must be from the research advisor and the second from someone familiar with the student’s academic career and proposed research project. The winners will be announced at the banquet of the Annual Meeting.

PREMIOS ESTUDIANTILES PARA INVESTIGACIÓN HOWARD MCCARLEY

El Fondo de Investigación Estudiantil Howard McCarley otorga hasta ocho premios al año, de hasta $3000 cada uno, para apoyar la investigación de los estudiantes. Los solicitantes deben ser estudiantes (licenciatura o posgrado) actualmente matriculados en una institución de educación superior, miembro de SWAN y patrocinados por un miembro de la facultad. Los premios se otorgarán en apoyo de cualquier aspecto de la investigación sobre la biota del suroeste de los Estados Unidos, México y América Central, excepto los viajes a las reuniones. Las personas podrán recibir un máximo de dos becas de la Asociación. Se alienta a todos los estudiantes calificados a postularse, especialmente en países en desarrollo. Las solicitudes de subvenciones pueden presentarse en inglés o en español. Se deben presentar dos cartas de recomendación en apoyo de la solicitud. Una debe ser del asesor de investigación y la segunda de alguien familiarizado con la carrera académica del estudiante y del proyecto de investigación propuesto. Los ganadores serán anunciados en el banquete de la Reunión Anual.
